Two major cooperatives based in the north-eastern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna have announced plans to merge.

Patfrut, a Bologna-based company which markets potatoes, onions and other vegetables and fruits, will combine its operations with Ferrara Frutta, a major supplier of pears as well as apples, stonefruit and melons.

The newly merged company will trade under the Patfrut name.Both cooperatives are affiliated to Apo Conerpo and Naturitalia, with clients not only in Italy but on international markets.

According to a press release, the companies have opted to combine their activities in order to achieve a more competitive position within the fresh produce sector.

A press conference will be held in Bologna on 30 January to officially announce the merger.

This will be attended by Apo Conerpo president Paolo Bruni, Assopa president Alberto Zambon, Patfrut president Luciano Torreggiani, Ferrara Frutta president Roberto Cera and Patfrut director Danilo Pirani.
