New Zealand-based supplier Turners & Growers says it is "well placed" to be a key exporter of New Zealand kiwifruit in the event that exports of domestic kiwifruit are deregulated.

The company made the declaration during its annual report to shareholders, in which it announced a 5.4 per cent year-on-year fall in pre-tax profits to NZ$22m (€11.2m).

Despite strong growth at home, the group said the high NZ dollar had affected its Enza-branded apple and pear exports, which fell slightly during the course of the year as growers looked to redevelop orchards in favour of newer, more exclusive varieties, it revealed. However, volumes of trademarked apple variety Jazz broke through the 1m-carton mark and are estimated to reach 6m cartons by 2011. Initial volumes of Enza's newest variety, Envy, will also be available for sale in 2010.
