Israel boycott

The UK’s biggest trade union, Unite, along with public sector trade union Unison, have revealed that they will be backing a boycott of Israeli goods proposed by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU).

The unions’ support will increase the likelihood that the TUC (the Trades Union Congress) will agree to the motion, which is due to be debated today at the TUC in Liverpool.

The motion calls for the TUC to review its links with Histadrut, its Israeli trade union counterpart, which was strongly supportive of Israel’s attack on Gaza between December and January.

It also calls for a ban on imports of all goods from illegal settlements, the termination of all arms trading with Israel, a boycott of Israeli goods and divestment from companies “associated with the occupation”.

Israeli growers of persimmons, citrus and avocados experienced a drop in orders following the assault on Gaza in January, with international boycotting campaigns being reinvigorated, particularly in the UK.
