Associated British Ports

Associated British Ports (ABP), the port group handling a quarter of the UK's seaborne trade, has become the first UK port owner to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for its efforts in reducing its carbon footprint.

The group was rewarded for cutting carbon emissions by 8.3 per cent between 2006 and 2008, demonstrating examples of good carbon management such as the introduction of regional carbon efficiency groups monitoring and seeking to reduce emissions at ABP's ports.

Investments in new facilities and equipment have also shown to result in efficiencies, such as the ABP's Humber Estuary Service, which introduced three new pilot launches using 15 per cent less fuel than their predecessors.

ABP owns and operates 21 ports across England, Scotland and Wales, including Ayr, Barry, Barrow, Cardiff, Fleetwood, Garston, Goole, Grimsby, Hull, Immingham, Ipswich, King's Lynn, Lowestoft, Newport, Plymouth (Milbay), Port Talbot, Silloth, Southampton, Swansea, Teignmouth and Troon.
