WOP

The World of Perishables, otherwise known as WOP Dubai, is set to take place in the UAE on 8-10 March at the Dubai Airport Expo.

According to organisers, the region’s appetite for fresh fruits and vegetables has remained strong despite the global downturn.

WOP Dubai is held under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Chairman of Dubai Municipality, and is the Middle East’s only dedicated trade fair for fruits and vegetables.

This year, the show has grown by 30 per cent in area, with 120 exhibitors from 18 countries. According to organisers, there will be seven country pavilions: China, Malaysia, Mexico, Tanzania, Egypt, Jordan and Kenya.

The show is organised by Planetfair Dubai LLC and Messe Essen GmbH, in cooperation with the Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Central Fruit and Vegetable Market, the Middle East’s biggest market for imports and exports.

Abdulla Mohammed Rafia, assistant director general of Dubai Municipality for general support services sector, commented: “The success of the World of Perishables show is a result of the growth in the fruits and vegetables market. According to the latest market research reports, Dubai has seen an increase in the import of both these commodities by 40 per cent since 2007 to reach more than US$1bn in value. This has been supported by the large overall expatriate population in the region who like to eat food and products from their home countries.”
