Ricura melon

A new range of small melons specifically produced for the northern European consumer is set to be launched in the UK market.

Mellissimo Ricura will be the first Piel de Sapo grown with the northern European shopper in mind, according to breeder Rijk Zwaan.

It will meet demand for a small, good quality Piel de Sapo with year-round availability, according to the company.

The melons weigh between 1.5kg and 2kg, have an oval-almond shape and golden-honey green skin. They have a minimum brix of 14 and feature white flesh and good biting quality.

They will reportedly be tested in the UK this season and introduced to retailers with a view to being sold commercially from next year.

The product has a wide planting window, transports well and looks good on the shelf, the company added. Rijk Zwaan also hopes to take the Piel de Sapo beyond its traditional Spanish market.
