The management board of Metro Group and the directors of Greenpeace have met in Amsterdam this week for an exchange of ideas and a discussion on actions being taken to protect the environment.

During the meeting, the German retailer's CEO Eckhard Cordes outlined the group's revised sustainability strategy, including the introduction of a sustainability board which is tasked with developing and implementing group-wide binding standards for sustainable management.

'It is our declared intention to conduct an intensive dialogue on sustainability issues with Greenpeace in future,' said Mr Cordes. 'Not only the expertise but in particular also the critical viewpoint of Greenpeace can help us drive important issues to the benefit of stakeholders.'

Greenpeace International executive director Kumi Naidoo welcomed the initiative of Metro to enter into a collective dialogue with the organisation.

'At every opportunity Greenpeace is happy to enter into constructive dialogue with companies like Metro,' Mr Naidoo explained. 'If we can find ways to work together in common purpose to protect our environment, especially our climate, forests and oceans, then that is what we should and will do.'
