Fyffes Group has announced that it has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in recognition of the action it has taken on reducing its carbon emissions.

The Ireland-based banana importer and distributor has become the first of its kind to be handed the Standard after measuring, managing and reducing its carbon emissions by nearly 8 per cent over the past three years.

Recognising real carbon reduction, the Carbon Trust Standard is based on a thorough independent assessment that certifies whether companies have reduced emissions across their own operations, and are committed to reducing them year-on-year.

'Fyffes is delighted to have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard,' said Fyffes' UK brand manager Paul Barrett. 'It is a great way of showing that we are on the front foot when it comes to carbon management best practices.

'Carbon emissions have been reduced significantly as part of the initiative and further reductions are in plan,' he added. 'Going through the assessment process to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard has helped to quantify our footprint, benchmark performance and identify areas for ongoing improvement.'

Harry Morrison, general manager of the Carbon Trust Standard, congratulated Fyffes on its certification, and pointed out that such dedication to carbon reduction helped to address energy efficiency scepticism.

'Customers and stakeholders hold a great deal of suspicion towards corporate environmental claims, so by having objective assurance that you are running an energy efficient business, you can directly address such scepticism,' Mr Morrison noted. 'Achieving the Carbon Trust Standard allows Fyffes to talk with integrity about the serious and credible steps it has taken to reduce its carbon emissions.'
