US-based blueberry genetics and nursery specialist Fall Creek has acquired two breeding and nursery companies in Italy, a move that marks its first venture into other berries.

The addition of Trentino-based Berryplant and Berrytech to its business is expected to strengthen its position in the international berry sector and expand its field of influence into raspberries and blackberries.

Commenting on the deal on LinkedIn, chief executive officer Marc de Beer said Fall Creek was excited to join forces with the companies’ “fantastic Rubus breeding and nursery platform”.

“As global demand for high quality berries continues to grow, we believe that the future belongs to organisations that combine great science, deep customer relationships and a long term commitment to innovation,” he said.

According to De Beer, the acquisition aligns with Fall Creek’s long-term strategy of supporting growers through genetics, plant production and technical expertise.

“At Fall Creek, we believe that better varieties, better plants and great support for growers can create value throughout the supply chain, culminating in exceptional fruit for consumers. This acquisition strengthens our ability to do that,” he stated.

The acquisition marks a significant step in Fall Creek’s evolution from a blueberry-focused specialist into a broader berry genetics and nursery company.
