The Girona Apple Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) expects production to reach 90,000 tonnes for the upcoming season from a planted area of 2,100ha. This is broadly in line with the 89,000 tonnes marketed under the PGI in 2025, but 10 per cent below the 100,000 tonnes marketed in 2024.

The forecast was presented during the PGI’s annual meeting, which brought together around 100 attendees from the three Poma de Girona cooperatives in Pals.

PGI’s president, Jaume Armengol, commented: “We live in a context with many environmental and social challenges, but it is also a time of opportunity where the value of local, regional products with their own identity is more recognised than ever”.

He noted that “the Girona Apple is not just a fruit, but the result of know-how passed down from generation to generation, a privileged territory, and a collective effort that allows us to offer an excellent product”.

During the event, the winner of the 2026 Poma de Girona award was also announced. The prize was launched in 2021 to recognise individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to promoting local agricultural products from Girona, and in particular, the Poma de Girona.

This year’s winner was Julio Basulto, a dietitian and nutritionist. A member of the College of Dietitians and Nutritionists of Catalonia, Basulto has developed a successful career in the field of scientific dissemination in food and public health, consistently championing the vital role of fresh fruit as a fundamental pillar of a healthy and balanced diet.
