Client-producer collaboration promotes the establishment of “forest-type” gardens in public schools in rural areas
Hortifrut and Nature’s Pride Foundation, linked to Nature’s Pride and Berries Pride, are jointly promoting a school garden programme in the district of Chao, Peru.
The project promotes the establishment of “forest-type” gardens in public schools in rural areas, integrating sustainable agricultural practices, food education, and community work.
“Many of these schools previously lacked green spaces, fresh produce, or knowledge about local fruits and vegetables. Today, thanks to the programme, students learn about nutrition, agriculture, and the environment, while also strengthening teamwork and their connection to the land,” Hortifrut said.
This initiative has already benefited over 3,000 people, including students, families, and teachers, in its first three years of implementation.
The school gardens are part of Hortifrut’s broader strategy to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Zero Hunger and Quality Education. At the same time, they reflect the key B Corp principle of extending positive impact throughout the entire value chain, from producer to consumer.
“This programme demonstrates how long-term relationships between client and producer can become a real lever for local development,” said Pía Walker, sustainability corporate director at Hortifrut. “It’s not just about fruit, but about opportunities to strengthen capacities in communities and contribute to their well-being in a concrete way.”
Coen van Iwaarden, a member of the Nature’s Pride Foundation Board, added: “Food education and environmental awareness are fundamental for a sustainable future. We are proud to contribute to this program alongside Hortifrut and the local communities”.
The model has already been replicated in three schools and includes theoretical and practical workshops on organic farming, composting, natural pollination, and nutrition. Efficient technified irrigation systems have also been installed, and an educational manual (a collaborative effort among various entities and funded by Nature’s Pride Foundation, available at https://huertosbosque.com/) has been developed for teachers, integrating the gardens into the school curriculum.
“This project reflects how strategic alliances between companies can have a positive and sustained impact on the communities where they operate,” Hortifrut said.
