Grower-distributor works with Seattle-based Veeam to implement software that ensures near-perfect data integrity across its operations

Fresh produce grower-distributor Unifrutti Group says it is harvesting data at every key point in its international supply network as part of its efforts to ensure the best quality and freshness in the fruit and veg it sells.
The company has worked with Seattle-based IT specialist Veeam to implement software that it says ensures practically 100 per cent resilience when it comes to the integrity of its data.
In a business staffed by 11,000 employees that spans four continents and more than 14,000ha of production area, the importance of having clear oversight of its farming operations and logistical activities is paramount, as any loss of information can harm its ability to sell its products.
“We gather and log data at every stage of harvesting, packaging, and shipping, with the goals of maximising quality and freshness,” says Dewet Blaauw, the group’s network and security manager. “We use this data to ensure the product is delivered to the end customer with the quality they expect, so maintaining complete records is essential to our profitability and ongoing optimisation of our crops.”
Using Veeam’s software, Unifrutti has apparently achieved 99.995 per cent data availability, with recovery time from episodes including power outages and hardware failures reduced to just eight minutes on average.
“Veeam boosts our cyber-resiliency on two counts,” says Blaauw. “First, by equipping us with reliable, easy-to-recover backups, and second, with powerful integrated threat detection, which helps us give even our most remote locations additional layers of protection against cybercrime.”
He adds: “If our systems go down, delicious fruit with a short window of freshness could go to waste. Months of cultivating the perfect crop could be lost to an IT failure. With Veeam, we can avoid that nightmare.”
