Mexican avocados in Hangzhou wholesale markets China

Mexican and Peruvian avocado producers are in talks to start up direct shipments to China, according to trade promotion agency ProMexico. CEO Francisco González said as both seasons complement each other it made commercial sense to study options to supply the market jointly.

“Mexico and Peru will bring their products to other markets depending on their seasonal availability,” he told Andina news agency. “For example, we can evaluate how we distribute our products in the Chinese marketplace.”

Working within the framework of the Pacific Alliance, companies from both countries could supply Asian markets when there is insufficient production from one country in order to maintain the level of exports.

González said the strategy was already being effectively employed to supply asparagus to Asia and could be used for other products such as peppers. “A complementary strategy gives us the opportunity to enter specific markets ahead of our competitors,” González said.

Peru’s avocado producer association ProHass pointed out that the Andean nation is the only country in the world that exports avocados during the spring and summer, meaning its marketing window complemented that of other major producing countries.
