The results of the recent Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee report, which showed how low fruit intake remains in the US, has inspired dietician, nutritionist and blogger Janey Helm to challenge the country to "get over your fear of fruit".

Helm's 'Eat & Run' health blog for US News & World Report examined the reasons why people shy away from eating fruits, while at the same time consuming so many cold-pressed juices and smoothies.

Inspired by US fresh produce supplier Frieda's specialty produce campaign, Eat One Fruit A Day That Scares You, Helm suggested trying new exotic fruits, especially with children - highlighting a study that proposes hands-on activities with fruit during playtime to encourage kids to try new things during meals.

"Maybe we all need some new inspiration to eat more fruit," Helm wrote.
