Price increases will push Peruvian agricultural exports to the European Union beyond US$2bn by the end of 2015, according to the chairman of the country’s agrifood exporter association Adex, Miguel Ognio. This represents a 10 per cent increase on last year’s total.

In comments made to El Peruano newspaper, Ognio said strong global demand for asparagus and other key products including cocoa and coffee was creating new opportunities for Peruvian exporters.

“Although the presence of El Niño phenomenon will affect the sector’s exportable supply, it will also represent an increase in the price of these products at the international market,” he noted.

Ognio said the EU was also Peru’s main market for organic and pesticide-free products. Last year Peru exported US$1.82bn of agricultural products to the EU.
