A new study published this week in the journal Pediatrics has found that apples lead the way in terms of fruit consumption for people aged between 2 and 19 in the US.

According to the study, consisting of more than 3,000 responses from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2012, apples make up 18.9 per cent of total fruit consumption for the age group.

When combined with apple juice, citrus juice and bananas, apples make up almost half of all fruit consumption in the country, the Pediatrics survey found.

The study also found that children are eating 1.25 cups of fruit each day.
