Blueberries

Florida-based berry grower SunnyRidge Farms unveiled its new growing and shipping operations to the trade last weekend in Tuxpan (Jalisco), Mexico.

The new venture, Blueberry Farms of Mexico (BBFM), was officially opened by the Mexican Secretary of Agriculture Sr. Alberto Cardenas-Jimenez.

SunnyRidge has been steadily expanding its Tuxpan operations since 2005, which now boasts 150ha of blueberries, blackberries and raspberries as well as a 900m2 shipping facility and 3.5ha of nursery production.

According to a company release, BBFM will strengthen SunnyRidge’s year-round availability of blueberries, blackberries and raspberries and enable the company to be better supply its customers during low production periods.

BBFM expects to be growing 1,000ha of blueberries and 500ha each of blackberries and raspberries within five years, making the company one of Mexico’s largest berry producers.
