Washington apples

Todd Fryhover has been unanimously voted as the new president of the Washington Apple Commission (WAC), officially stepping into the role on 1 January 2009.

According to a report in The Packer, Mr Fryhover, 46, had been backed to replace Dave Carlson, who was placed on administrative leave for an indefinite period of time in July this year.

'This is a tremendous opportunity and an honour to have this bestowed upon me by 14 hard-working board members,' Mr Fryhover said. 'It's a big job, and a great industry.'

Ken Severn, who had been serving as interim president following Mr Carlson's departure, said that the board had made the right choice.

'We think he'll add a lot of value to the Washington industry going forward,' he said. 'He's dynamic, brings a lot of experience and we're absolutely delighted to have him on board as our new president.'

Mr Fryhover told The Packer that one of his main roles will be to oversee an increase in international exports, pointing to Mexico, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and India as key growth markets. He added that he would like to see a 15 per cent increase in exports during 2008/09 to 35m boxes.
