Food safety authorities in Peru and Mexico are reportedly close to signing a phytosanitary protocol which would allow Peruvian tangelos, oranges and lemons to enter the Mexican market next year.

The pest risk analysis is already well underway and an agreement is expected to be established in early 2010, the Peruvian Agrarian Health and Food Safety Agency (Senasa), told Peruvian news agency Andina.

“The pest risk analysis process consists of three stages, and then results are compared with Mexico’s list of quarantine pests,” explained Senasa’s new head Américo Florez. “The second stage of the process is currently underway.”

Mr Florez added that Senasa officials are also working to remove phytosanitary barriers for exports of Peruvian kiwicha and avocados.
