Pakistani fruit prices rise for Ramadan

Fruit prices have surged in Pakistani markets as Ramadan drives up demand

Prices for fruit have reached unprecedented prices, following from similar price hikes in flour and rice.

“In Ramadan, everybody wants to buy fruits for iftar but their prices are sky rocketing as vendors are charging at their own will,” said resident Kabir Rasool.

The government has set prices individually at each market at a lower level than vendors are selling, but consumers say the government levels are still too high.

Prices of apples have doubled to about Rs60 per kg, as have bananas to about Rs80 per kg. High quality grapes have hit about Rs200 per kg.
