UK grocery retailer is reportedly planning to open up to 80 new stores in Poland this year, as part of a strategy to buy as many as 1,000 properties in 600 areas of the country over the coming years.

The supermarket operator is set to invest 1bn zlotys (€249m) in the new outlets, which will add to the 370 stores that it already has in Poland, according to the Financial Times.

With independent stores still accounting for 40 per cent of Poland’s grocery retail sector – a figure far higher than that of any other EU country – there appears to be a great deal of potential for expansion for major chains in the country.

In fact, Polish retail sales are forecast to increase by 10 per cent during the second half of 2011, while the annual retail growth rate has only fallen slightly from 13.8 per cent in May to 10.9 per cent in June, the report said.
