A new survey conducted by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Directorate of Wholesale Markets has revealed that consumers in Istanbul favour oranges and spinach as the winter months draw in.

The study, announced by director Bayram Ali çakiroglu and published by daily news portal Today's Zaman, covered some 8,013 participants from all of Istanbul’s 39 districts.

Results showed that, in winter, most Istanbulites preferred spinach as the favoured vegetable of choice (44.2 per cent), followed by leek (10.6 per cent), white cabbage (10.3 per cent), cauliflower (5.6 per cent) and potato (3.4 per cent).

However, none of these vegetables were listed when participants were asked their favourite summer vegetables, which were green beans at 34.5 per cent, followed by tomato (18.3 per cent), aubergine (16.6 per cent), peppers (5.8 per cent) and cucumber (3.4 per cent).

When asked about their winter fruit of choice, oranges topped the list at 35 per cent, followed by apples (26.7 per cent), tangerines (17.2 per cent), pomegranates (3.8 per cent) and bananas (2.9 per cent).

This compared with the top summer fruits of watermelon (29.4 per cent), cherries (16 per cent), grapes (14.7 per cent), strawberries (8.2 per cent) and green plums (5 per cent).
