SalaVerde lettuce Behr

German salad marketer Behr says its hybrid lettuce variety SalaVerde is selling well through a number of the country's supermarkets, following its market debut earlier this year.

The new elongated lettuce, which has heart-shaped, pointed leaves, is said to offer consumers a good combination of product characteristics drawn from Romaine and Butterhead varieties, and is described by Behr as 'tender but crisp to the bite, versatile and durable'.

'Thanks to its closed form, SalaVerde lettuce is usually already clean when it leaves the field and so does not need to be washed further,' said a spokesperson for the company. 'This saves time, energy and waste.'

SalaVerde also offers consumers an 'intensely aromatic' taste, according to Behr, and thanks to its sturdy, elongated leaves can even be used to serve dips.

Behr said it planned to source SalaVerde lettuce year-round, drawing on German production in the summer and then switching to Spanish suppliers during the winter months.
