In a move that will impact the South African export industry in particular, Zimbabwe has moved to ban imports of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Reuters reported that the country's ministry for agriculture announced the ban on Wednesday 2 April, claiming that greater volumes of locally grown fresh produce would help cater for demand among Zimbabwe's populace.

The ministry added that the ban would mainly impact on South Africa, with the neighbouring country exporting at least US$1m of fresh produce to Zimbabwe each month.
