Berry company Driscoll’s has started the Dutch blackberry season off with its successful Victoria variety.
According to the group, by utilising its glasshouses it is able to produce berries with an “exceptional taste and outstanding fruit size”, enabling Driscoll’s to “surprise consumers with delightful products”.
“Driscoll’s Victoria is the result of our own unique breeding programme in which we fully focus on taste, look and shelf life,” explained Fanny Pitsioudis, Driscoll’s agronomy consultant. “What we discovered is that this blackberry variety performs even better in the protected environment of a glasshouse, as the berries are bigger, sweeter and juicer than before.”
Driscoll’s growers Jan and Alfons Diepstraten of growers association Best of Four reap the benefits of this glass house success.
“We trust on Driscoll’s when it comes to high quality varieties and advanced production methods,” said Diepstraten. “Last year we already experienced how huge and sweet these blackberries are, that is why we decided to expand our production from 2 hectares to 5 hectares. I am looking forward to seeing the final results of this season, although this will take some time as we will be picking blackberries until December.”
