Exports of Italian fresh fruit and vegetables jumped 6.3 per cent during the first six months of the year, up to approximately 1.82m tonnes.

Total export value climbed 21.1 per cent compared with the corresponding period of 2007, according to Italiafruit News, to a total of €1.73bn.

According to the publication, fresh produce imports during the January-June half jumped 6.1 per cent to 1.61m tonnes, compared with just 1.52m tonnes in 2007.

Overall fruit and vegetable import value rose 6.2 per cent to a total of €1.27bn, the publication reported.
