Since the beginning of the year, commercial AOPs (associations of producer organisations) have started to be set up across France to better coordinate the production of fresh produce with the distribution.
The latest AOP to be created is Perle du Nord, which brings together six OPs (producer organisations) that represent some 300 chicory producers in the north of France, in Nord, Pas-de-Calais and Picardy.
Together these growers produce approximately 87,000 tonnes of chicory, of which 20 per cent is sold under the Perle du Nord brand.
The new AOP aims to revive the Perle du Nord brand with regard to quality, marketing, innovation and commercial organisation.
