Israeli transportation minister Shaul Mofaz announced last week that the port of Haifa would have the first privately operated commercial seaport in the country, according to shipping portal Port2Port.

The decision finally put an end to the long-running debate over the first privately operated commercial seaport. The US$800m (€617m) project is slated for completion by 2015.

According to a spokesperson for the transportation ministry in Jerusalem, Haifa was chosen so that its maritime infrastructure could be improved to equal that of the port of Ashdod.
