India is planning to boost its exports to the Middle East by organising horticultural fairs in the region to showcase its produce.

Indian minister of state for agriculture K V Thomas, speaking in Bangalore, told the Press Trust of India that the Gulf region offers huge export potential.

A total of Rs12bn in funds has been allocated to India's National Horticulture Mission, the central body that promotes growth in the sector, with around Rs7bn already spent by different states, Mr Thomas said.

'On the basis of the amount spent by the state, the central government will release additional funds if required,' he added.

The Indian government has also been conducting horticultural fairs in different parts of the country to provide farmers with a forum to exchange technical information.
