Mango exporters from Malihabad, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, are in good spirits following a solid production season and a jump in export orders for their Dussehari mango variety.

Orders for the fruit have been received from countries such as Dubai, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan, Indian news portal Sify.com has reported.

Malihabad exporters have said they are aiming to create a global demand for the product similar to that enjoyed by the Alphonso mango variety, and their campaign has been enhanced by the granting of Geographical Indicator status for the region's mangoes earlier this year.

"Earlier Alphonsos from Maharashtra were being sent outside (India), so people know the Alphonso more. This time we are trying to make Dussehari familiar to the world," said Insram Ali, president of the Indian Mango Growers' Association.

Malihabad mango exporter Husnain Ali said domestic prices weren't as lucrative as those offered by overseas markets.

"We don't get the worth of our toil from the fruit markets here, so we will get more benefit from the Dussehari exports. Also the quality of Dussehari mangoes has not (yet) been recognised by the world," he said.
