Turkish cherries

Turkey's exports of fresh fruits and vegetables exceeded US$1bn (€800m) in the first half of the year, FreshPlaza has reported, on course to meet the ambitious full year target.

From January to June 2010, exports of fresh fruit and vegetables increased to US$1.1bn (€875m) compared with US$948m (€754m) in the same period last year, according to Kemal Kacmaz, chairman of the Union of Turkish Exporters of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables.

'Our exports reached US$1.9bn `€1.5bn` in 2009,' he said. 'We set our year-end target for 2010 as US$2.2bn `€1.75bn`. Despite some difficulties, our exports exceeded US$1bn `€800m` in the first half of the year. These figures indicate that we will be able to reach our year-end target.'

Exports of fresh vegetables amounted to US$549.5m (€437m) in the first half of the year, with tomatoes accounting for US$415.5m (€330.5m).

As for fruits, US$99.9m (€80m) of cherries were reportedly exported, with others including strawberries, apples and apricots.
