The facility will strengthen the company’s cucumber, tomato and pepper research programmes

Sakata has opened a new research station in the Turkish city of Antalya. The 2.5ha R&D station includes a nursery, traditional greenhouses, crossing block greenhouses, hydroponic greenhouses, a laboratory, fields and offices.

The seed company said the new facility will allow it to reinforce its cucumber research programmes and further expand its current tomato and pepper research programmes.

“These R&D efforts will enable the creation of new varieties to address the needs of Turkish growers and plant raisers, but also to meet the expectations of the European, Eurasian, Middle East and Central Asia markets.

Sakata held an inauguration ceremony last week attended by local dignitaries, as well as Hiroshi Sakata, president of Sakata Seed Corporation and Basile de Bary, CEO of Sakata Vegetables Europe.

Sakata employs 34 people in Turkey. Its Turkish headquarters, Sakata Tarım Ürünleri ve Tohumculuk Sanayi ve Ticaret Limited Şirketi, remain in Izmir.
