Around 10,300ha of Spain’s 35,000ha of avocado and mango production is now organic

Organic production of subtropical fruits such as mangoes and avocados is increasing at a rate of around 15 per cent a year in Spain, driven by strong consumer demand for healthier and more sustainable products.
As reported in Europa Press, Spain now has more than 10,300ha of certified organic production, compared to just 375ha in 2001. Almost a third of the total planted area for these crops is now organic. Regionally, Andalusia leads the way, although the Valencian Community and Canary Islands are also growing strongly.
Spain has become a powerhouse the production of organic avocados and mangoes within the European Union. In the 2025/26 campaign, the country will have more than 35,000ha of both conventional and organic production of these crops.
“The demands to certify organic farms are multiplied by the consumer’s commitment to health and the environment,” Alejandro Hevilla, head of subtropical products at Spain’s main organics certification body, CAAE, told Europa Press.
According to CAAE estimates, Spain could reach 24,000ha of organic avocado and mango by 2030.
