South Tyrolean consortium Vog, a leading supplier of apples based in the north-east of Italy, has named Harald Weis as its new chairman, following a unanimous vote during its annual general meeting.

Weis was previously the consortium’s vice-chairman, and is also chair of the Roen, one of its member cooperatives. He takes over from Georg Kössler, who steps down after 17 years at the helm.

“As  chairman, in the next few years I want to continue to work in the interests of our farmers,” he commented. “ In a globalised world, the combination of a strong association and centralised marketing is imperative for the success of our fruit sector.”

His appointment is seen as a safe bet by the consortium’s 4,000 or so grower members, and one that guarantees its operational and strategic continuity as a major player in the international apple market.

Since his appointment in 2008, Kössler has overseen the group’s considerable growth and the consolidation of its position in the market as a self-styled ‘Home of Apples’.

During his tenure, the consortium pursued a strategy of vertical supply chain integration, as well as relentless innovation in its variety and brand portfolio.

As a result, it now boast one of the widest and most varied year-round product ranges in the apple business.

“I look back at lots of  very busy years in which we managed to make important changes,” Kössler reflected.  “The most recent key developments were the introduction of centralised marketing and the renewal of our product range, supported by our farmers with substantial investments.

He added: “ Today Vog  represents a leading European apple farming region that is dedicated to quality. The strong sense of cohesion within our community makes me optimistic for the future.”
