BAPL chair Ali Capper has looked into the lifecycle emissions of Gala

Apple growers interested in net zero have the chance to learn about biochar as a solution to ‘end of orchard life’ wood as part of a free Soil Association webinar next month.

The event, taking place online on 26 February, will feature presentations from British Apples and Pears executive chair, Ali Capper, with her findings on the lifecycle carbon analysis of British-grown gala.

Co-founder of Cobblers Farm in Worcestershire, Rob Collins, will talk about the process of grubbing out an orchard to process wood material. After both speakers, there will be a Q&A.

The Innovate UK-funded project looked at how commercial apple is a low emission crop but there are challenges at end of orchard life and in terms of the lifecycle carbon analysis (LCA) of the crop production, with actionable results for all growers.

The event is part of the Soil Association’s ‘Agroecology at Scale Programme’, and part of the charity’s Farm to Fork Partnership with Ocado.

A second event in February will look at the potential for agroforestry as a pollinator-friendly farming practice, with speakers including head of agroforestry at the Soil Association, Ben Raskin; the Wildlife Trust’s Vicki Hird; and organic seed grower Sarah Holdsworth.
