New and better varieties remain key priority for entire sector as market makes even tougher demands on suppliers

Giorgio Mancino addresses Table Grape Conference 2025

The future of the Italian table grape industry was the central theme at Table Grape Conference 2025, which took place last week in the sun-drenched city of Catania, Sicily.

The event brought together leading growers, exporters, and technologists to dissect the critical challenges and opportunities defining the sector today, and top of the list were the need for quality production and the pace of varietal renewal.

Discussions highlighted increasing consumer demand for seedless, firm, and flavourful grapes, a trend that obliges producers across the Mediterranean to accelerate away from legacy varieties.

That shift is crucial if the sector wants to stay relevant and compete, a topic that dominated other talks on exports and global market dynamics.

Experts analysed current retail trends, noting that transparency and sustainability are rapidly becoming non-negotiable entry points for major European retail buyers.

Particular focus was also placed on the fruit’s post-harvest treatment, specifically how to extend shelf-life and maintain premium quality during transit.

Technology, whether in advanced coldstorage techniques, precision sorting, or traceable packaging solutions, was seen as a key enabler for the industry to grow and maximise its returns and reduce waste.

The event also served as an excellent networking platform, with a busy, small expo room hosting a dozen stands.

Fruitnet returns

I was delighted to address the audience and confirm that our own Fruitnet Grape Congress returns to Bari, Puglia, on 20-21 October 2026, alongside LUV Fiera.

Puglia, a major production hub for table grapes, provides the perfect backdrop for our event, which continues its focus on innovation, market access, and strategic partnerships across the grape supply chain.

And the enthusiasm shown by those who were in Catania last week proves that the Italian table grape sector is ready to embrace any and all changes necessary for sustained success in a rapidly evolving global market.

We look forward to seeing you all in Bari next year.
