Adaptive lighting system to help explore innovation in sustainable horticulture and food production
Cardiff-based LED lighting specialist Bloemteknik will supply its horticultural lighting system to a new greenhouse at the Eden Project in Cornwall.
The Eden Project is a charity and garden that welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and is also widely recognised as one of the world’s leading destinations for environmental education and plant science.
Bloemteknik’s greenhouse lighting system has been designed to support the year-round production of high-quality, sustainably grown crops for Eden Project visitors, while demonstrating how modern horticultural technologies can respond more intelligently to real-time environmental variation.
The project combines Bloem’s Top Crop 4 LED fixtures with GreenFingers, a technology that uses real-time adaptive lighting control to dynamically respond to changing greenhouse conditions.
Unlike conventional lighting systems that rely on fixed schedules or static setpoints, the new platform continuously monitors greenhouse conditions and automatically adjusts lighting in response to available natural light and predefined cultivation objectives. As natural light levels fluctuate throughout the day the system adapts, reducing lighting when sunlight is abundant and increasing output when conditions change.
This ensures crop performance while also optimising resource use. The lighting output will also be adjusted in response to predefined cultivation objectives defined in collaboration with Eden Project growers.
The installation is part of the Eden Project’s ongoing commitment to exploring innovative approaches to sustainable horticulture and food production.
