Produce for Kids

Produce for Kids (PFK), the organisation that promotes the benefits of healthy eating and supports worthy causes for children in the US, has announced it is to expand its retail consumption programme.

The Ideal Meals campaign will roll out at some of the stores operated by PFK’s partner retailers and is based on the introduction of a meal solution card, according to a press release from the association.

The programme features individual-sized cards merchandised in the produce department which offer quick, healthy meal solutions for busy shoppers.

The meal suggestions have been developed by registered dieticians and meet healthy daily dietary guidelines established by the USDA, according to PFK.

“We’re proud of our efforts to promote healthy lifestyles for families by educating kids and parents about the benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables in new and innovative ways,” said Heidi McIntyre, PFK executive director.

“Our consumer research shows moms are hungry for information about healthy cooking using fresh produce items. Our new meal solutions cards make it easy to shop for and prepare healthy and delicious meals for their families.”

The announcement was made at the Southeast Produce Council’s annual convention, Southern Exposure, held on Friday 5 March.

During the reception, PFK also celebrated the completion of its 2009 annual programme and thanked the continued support of its partner retailers and suppliers.

Since its inception in 2002, PFK said it has raised more than US$2.5m for children’s charities including Children’s Miracle Network hospitals and PBS KIDS.

“We’re thankful for the strong support we continue to receive from our partners,” said John Shuman, PFK founder and president. “We appreciate everyone who supported our mission to date and we’re looking forward to introducing new elements of the programme in 2010.”
