Italian retailer Conad is running a major promotion designed to attract price-conscious consumers to its stores.

The 'Bis' campaign, which offers shoppers a number of goods at two for the price of one, is in operation all this week and involves some 1,500 supermarkets across the country.

The promotion includes a basket of around 100 items, which Conad says meets the daily requirements of Italian families.

The retailer is expected to provide its customers with total savings of around €35m on goods worth €70m.

'This initiative is helping consumers make ends meet in a difficult period,' commented Conad's general director Francesco Pugliese.

Mr Pugliese also defended his company's position with regard to homegrown produce following criticism from rival retailer Coldiretti, which accused Conad of failing to support Italian producers and ensure proper transparency in terms of product origin.

'Our support for producers, which are often penalised because of the small scale of their operations, has also been seen in the promotional role we play on foreign markets,' said Mr Pugliese.

He added: 'This happened last year with Sicilian oranges and grapes from Puglia, which, thanks to Conad, were distributed in France, Switzerland and Belgium, helping producers to overcome difficulties in reaching international markets.'
