Pipfruit New Zealand has announced Christchurch businessman Alan Pollard will take over the helm from outgoing chief executive Peter Beaven from mid-March this year.

Pollard is new to the horticulture industry, with a background managing large law firms, and was until recently president of the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce.

“Although Alan has not previously been involved in horticulture, he has the acumen and communication skills to quickly become an asset to our industry,” said Pipfruit New Zealand chairman Ian Palmer.

“He is accustomed to dealing with government politicians and officials in a highly regulated environment, and will be an excellent advocate for apple and pear growers and exporters. His background in law and commerce is what we need and he has the right personality to establish strong relationships throughout our supply chain.”

Beaven will stay on in a part time role as special projects manager to aid in the transition and help Pollard get up to speed on the industry.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me to add my contribution to an industry which, while facing its own challenges, is an important part of the New Zealand economy and is held in such high regard both domestically and internationally,” Pollard stated.

The upcoming March edition of Asiafruit Magazine features an exclusive interview with outgoing Pipfruit New Zealand CEO Peter Beaven.
