Export volumes of Spanish tomatoes and peppers both fell in January-September

Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports decreased by 2.8 per cent in volume during January-September, when compared to the same period of the previous year.

Volume came in at 8.8mn tonnes, according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes processed by Fepex.

In value terms, exports increased by 6.3 per cent, reaching €13.876bn during the nine months in question.

Of this total, €8.1bn was generated by fruit exports, up 9.7 per cent year-on-year, while €5.776bn came from vegetable exports, growth of 1.9 per cent.

Fresh fruit exports came in at just over 5mn tonnes, holding steady when compared with 2024. 

After citrus, the most exported fruits were stonefruit, watermelon, berries, and melons.

All stonefruit varieties saw declines, Fepex pointed out, with the most significant drops being in apricots and flat peaches, which fell by 12 per cent.

The only increase in stonefruit exports was in the cherry category, which rose by 10 per cent in volume from 39,360 tonnes to 43,603 tonnes.

Overall, stonefruit exports decreased by 4.9 per cent, totalling 814,972 tonnes.

Watermelon exports reached 798,732 tonnes (up 2.79 per cent) at a value of €592mn (up 8.6 per cent), while melon exports climbed to 357,701 tonnes (up 9.9 per cent) and €335.9mn (up 7.5 per cent).

In the berry segment, strawberries stood out, with exports through September reaching 259,689 tonnes (up 2.7 per cent) and €848mn (up 9.6 per cent).

The country’s fresh vegetable exports amounted to 3.79mn tonnes during January-September, falling 6.3 per cent.

There were decreasing volumes in two key vegetable categories – peppers and tomatoes – lettuce exports remained steady, and cucumber exports increased.

Pepper exports reached 521,155 tonnes (down 6.2 per cent) and €1.18mn in value (up 6.9 per cent), while tomato exports came in at 422,007 tonnes (down 15.6 per cent) and €754mn (down 3.3 per cent).

Lettuce exports remained virtually unchanged in volume at 502,296 tonnes (up 0.2 per cent) and grew in value to €664 million (up 8.5 per cent), while cucumber exports jumped to 471,103 tonnes (up 9.6 per cent) and €691mn (up 17.9 per cent).
